The OG who first opened Five Star Hainanese Chicken Rice in Shanghai is bringing back his famous poached chicken, serving it at Lost Bistro. On the menu are two birds: Hainanese chicken rice and a French-style roast.

Lost Bistro is located on the ground floor of Lost Heaven on Gaoyou Lu and was shares the space with Lost Bakery. In the kitchen is Singaporean chef Xander Ang, the guy who opened the first Five Star Hainanese Chicken Rice in 2014 on Jiaozhou Lu. It was possibly the best Hainanese chicken at the time. Now he's putting it back on the menu, and it tastes just like home.

The menu at Lost Bistro is straightforward: Ultra-tender poached chicken and an equally juicy whole-roasted bird with sides to match. It’s tasty, affordable, every day food.

Hainanese Chicken Rice — Thigh (¥68), half chicken (¥98), whole (¥168), served with the three classic sauces of fermented garlic-chili, ginger and scallions with sesame oil, and sweet dark soy sauce.

Fragrant garlic chicken rice (¥12)

French-Style Roasted Chicken — Thigh (¥68), half (¥98), whole (¥168), served with garlic aioli.

Roasted Potatoes (¥28), Roasted Seasonal Vegetables (¥25)

Iced Kalamansi and Iced Lemon Tea (¥28 each)

Italian restaurant Frasca at The Middle House has just refreshed their menu for the season, featuring a couple new dishes from Chef Lorenzo Merolle featuring summer salads, seasonal pastas, and a Roman Maritozzo sweet pastry for dessert. The fresh pastas are exquisite, made fresh daily with eggs and semolina flour.

Insalata di Crescione & Carciofi (¥108) – Watercress salad with broad beans, baby sweet peas, fresh baby artichokes, pecorino romano, lemon, and extra virgin olive oil dressing.

Burrata & Proscuitto (¥128) – 125g of burrata with 36-month aged parma ham, confit heritage tomatoes, fresh arugula, and garlic flowers.

Tagliolini Al Branzino (¥148) – Fresh egg pasta with Dalian sea bass, calamansi vinaigrette, and baby artichokes. It’s a light summery dish.

Tagliatelle Frasca Ragu (¥228) – Not new but worth ordering. This chef’s signature pasta is made with fresh tagliatelle, coated in a chunky ragu of Mayura wagyu beef, pork shoulder, and veal ossobuco. Fantastic.

Tagliata ai Ferri (¥288) – 150g of Australian Ranger Valley Infinity M9 flank steak, served with roasted and marinated baby eggplant. It’s an uber rich, high-marbled cut of meat with an opulent red wine and beef reduction. Be sure to get every last drop of that sauce with the table bread.

Fagioli e Cipolle (¥58) – A side dish of steamed cannellini beans with fresh onions.

Maritozzaro (¥88) – A fluffy sweet bun pastry from Rome, traditionally filled with whipped cream. Pistachio ice cream is also an option, pictured above. A heavy dessert.

Plant-based “vegan deli” and salad bar Carrot & Cleaver by MissGreen has just launched meal plans, available for delivery via their mini-program, in addition to some new dishes at their location at Shanghai Centre.

2-day meal plan
First off, the meal plans. There are four plans available, for two, five, seven, and 14 days, for ¥364, ¥850, ¥1,230, and ¥2,988, respectively. Each day’s meal plan includes at least two hefty meals for breakfast, lunch, or dinner, plus a dessert, a healthy snack, or a beverage, with a daily calorie count from 1200kcal to 1800kcal.

One day's worth of food
Meal plans like these are especially convenient if you’re on a vegan diet but don’t have time to prepare your meals. As a meat eater, meal plans like these are not for me, but I can say that some of the items were quite tasty, like the sandwich and power bowl.

Chili Con Carne rice with roasted peppers, charred vegan cheese, and greens. Only available in the meal plan.
Some of the meal plan items are also available a la carte for delivery and in-store:

Green Curry (¥62) with MissGreen plant-based crab balls over high-fiber rice.

Kimchi Cheese Sandwich (¥68) – This is pretty darn good. And it’s especially interesting because it has a tasty, slightly sweet house-made vegan cheese, made from fermented cashews. Coupled with tons of greens and spicy kimchi.

Kombucha (¥35)

MissGreen Power Bowl (¥68) – A hefty bowl of quinoa, chickpeas, avocado, vegan meatballs, plenty of greens, and more of that tasty vegan cheese.
